The Florida Keys sit in the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) — the most stringent building code jurisdiction in the United States. Design wind speeds here reach 180+ mph, and every roofing product, fastener, and installation method must be specifically approved for HVHZ use under the Florida Building Code.

This isn't just a technicality. Hurricane Irma (2017) made landfall at Cudjoe Key as a Category 4 with 130 mph sustained winds and hit the entire island chain. Homes and businesses with code-compliant roofs fared dramatically better than those with aging or improperly installed systems. Hurricane Georges (1998) and Wilma (2005) taught the same lesson — the Keys get hit, and only properly engineered roofs survive.

We specify aluminum or marine-grade Galvalume panels for Keys installations — they cost more upfront but won't corrode. Every fastener, clip, and piece of trim must also be corrosion-resistant. One stainless steel screw missed in favor of a galvanized one becomes a leak point in a few years.
